Pbd's 5 moves for the week
October 30, 2021
1. Reflect

"When the cat's away, the mice will play." Famous saying to denote that with no authority present, people will slack off. PBD said, "A lion doesn't need a boss around to roar. In fact, if you want to stand out, you step up even more when the boss is gone."

Your Move

Stop looking for external sources of accountability and motivation. Start finding your own sources of accountability and motivation.

2. Stat of the week

Does delegating have its limits? Can you ask your assistant to tell your spouse or kids that you love them? Do you delegate the act of showing appreciation to your team? Do you outsource letting people know how important they are to you?

Your Move

Pick up the phone! Make the extra calls. Give the personal touch. Make sure people hear your voice. In a digital world, personal touch stands out (handwritten notes are also effective). As much as I believe in delegating non-essential tasks, letting people know how important they are to you --by hearing your voice--is one thousand percent essential.

3. Strategize

Are you feeling a little too good about your success? When everyone is telling you how great you are, it’s human nature to get comfortable, stop being paranoid, or worse, stop learning at all. Those who are the quickest to deny this are the ones most likely to have this blind spot.

Your Move

Commit to staying humble and always being a student. If you’re getting cocky or starting to plateau, it may be because you think you know it all. Once that happens, you could be headed for a fall. Watch this video to see exactly what I mean.

4. Read

Developing the Leaders Around You: How to Help Others Reach Their Full Potential by John C. Maxwell. I recommended this book to one of our Mastermind Groups.

Your Move

Read it and integrate it since leadership development creates exponential growth. You also need to be regularly processing issues with peers and a mentor. Whether it's Vistage, YPO, or a local group, it's essential. To get a sense of what this looks like, we still have a few spots left in our General Mastermind for this Wednesday, November 3.

5. Perspective

The ability to dream and see a brighter future.

Your Move

One of the most powerful thing you can say to people is: "How about we make 2022 the beginning of the greatest year of your life?" If you want to lead people, you have to tap into their dreams and stir up emotion. It's also not enough to say it. You have to live it by finishing up this year strong and committing to an in-depth strategic planning and goal-setting session for 2022 long before the new year.
