Pbd's 5 moves for the week
October 24, 2021
1. Reflect

Einstein said, "Stay away from negative people. They have a problem for every solution." PBD said, "Victims are the best recruiters. It's your job as a leader to stop them."

Your Move

Avoiding victims in your personal life is a given. When you encounter them in your organization, you better find a way to stop their cancerous recruiting mission. When I hear a victim story once, I empathize. When I hear it for the fifth time, I have no problem shutting that person down. They hate me in the moment, and I don't care. Do you have the courage to do the same?

2. Stat of the week

Are you better at working with your superiors, your coworkers/teammates, or the people who report to you?

Your Move

Rank yourself in all three areas. Get clear on the consequences of weaknesses in each area and make a plan to address them.

3. Strategize

What are you underestimating? Most underestimate how much urgency it takes to succeed. Most underestimate the competition. Most underestimate the personal toll it will take.

Your Move

Get clear on your vision and how bad you want it. Then get honest about what it will take to get there. Rather than underestimating the obstacles, you will understand exactly what it takes to succeed. Watch this video to learn more about what motivates you.

4. Read

The documentary Love Means Zero about famed tennis coach Nick Bollettieri and his relationship with Andre Agassi. I watched this with a group of leaders to show them the value of building a culture where teammates challenge each other to be better. We also processed Bollettieri's strengths and weaknesses as a leader.

Your Move

Choose a documentary for your team that ties into the most important goal of your next meeting. There's value in stories, and it's another way to reach people. Especially at an offsite or multi-day retreat, you want to present information in a variety of ways. Even the strongest voices can lose their impact after a while.

5. Perspective

Challenges In my interview with Dr. Warren Farrell, I was reminded about the adversity I faced as a kid.

Your Move

Process your childhood and take the time to understand where you came from. When you get comfortable with who you are, you get to a place of gratitude for your challenges since everything that happened to you--good and bad--shaped who you are today.
