First, screen for people who can take feedback and have a track record for being coachable. Second, continue to give constructive feedback and keep standards high. If you lose the people who aren't coachable, what have you really lost?
If you really want to drive a killer, you need to find another competitor to bring out the best in them. Only so much can come from the leader.
Create a domino effect by focusing on the first domino in your organization. Find people to compete with your best so they continually feel pressure to exceed their best.
What's the best part about capitalism? Is it that it rewards workers who find a way to win or that it lets people without the right strategy and work ethic fail?
Allow people to fail, so when they truly put in the work, they can own their victories.

Every interaction has to be scheduled, which means a lot of information-sharing doesn't happen. Remote is a great lifestyle, not a way to build a great company.
Pay attention to trends and then choose your own path. Too many people follow the herd. Many of those got burned by abandoning their own principles and values and letting people work remotely. Now they have no clue how to build a culture.
People who cannot be fooled. Because words can only get you so far, you have to live up to your words and continue to perform.
Use the right words AND back them up. People are going to start tuning you out the minute your behavior isn't consistent with your words.
