Pbd's 5 moves for the week
December 6, 2021
1. Reflect

There are more than 50,000 businesses in Japan that are at least 100 years old. In the U.S., only 1 in 4 companies founded in 1994 was still operating in 2004. The reason: planning for longevity instead of the next quarter.

Your Move

When you create your next business plan, instead of thinking about the next year, think about the next 20 years. If you would like some guidance, join me for a full day virtual Business Planning Workshop on December 20.

2. Stat of the week

Have you identified your enemy? In sports, the enemy is easy to identify. The rivalries are pre-determined. You know who you have to beat to win the championship.

Your Move

Both you and your team will have an extra level of fire and commitment when you have a defined enemy. If the enemy isn't obvious, you have to identify the enemy and put a target on them.

3. Strategize

Gail Sheehy, a journalist and author said, "If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, we are not really living."

Your Move

Make the uncomfortable decision to leave your comfort zone and challenge yourself. Start taking action before you are ready.

4. Read

Barbarians to Bureaucrats: Corporate Life Cycle Strategies by Lawrence M. Miller. I've been talking about this book for more than a decade. Published in 1990, it's as relevant today as it was thirty years ago.

Your Move

Check out the video I made about this book. Identify the stage your company is in. Understand that bureaucrats have their place, but when they manage at the expense of innovation, they can lead to the downfall of your company. Be very careful who you hire and who you trust with power.

5. Perspective

Loyal friends and true believers.

Your Move

If you're lucky enough to have loyal friends who will go to bat for you, show your gratitude by continuing to be there for them.
